Ney, nefsânî arzulardan kurtulmuş, nefsini yok etıniş, ilâhî sevgi ile dolmuş kâmil insanın sembolüdür. Ney, kamışlıktan ayrı düştüğü için inlemektedir. İnsan da, ezel âleminden, rûh âleminden dünyaya sürgün edilmiştir. Hakk’tan ayrı düştüğü için muzdariptir. Dünyada yaşadığı müddetçe, acılar, hastalıklar, belâlar içinde çırpındıkça insan, rûh âlemindeki mutluluğunun özlemini duyacak, yabancı olduğu ve sürgün gibi yaşadığı dünyadan kurtuluş yollarını arayacaktır.

Şu Ney’in neler söylediğini can kulağı ile dinle, o ayrılıklardan şikâyet etmededir. Ney kendine has bir dille, hal dili ile diyor ki: “Beni kamışlıktan kes¬tiklerinden beri, feryadımdan, duygulu olan erkek de, kadın da inle¬mekte, ağlamaktadır. Şu var ki beni dinleyen her insan, benim neler dediğimi anlayamaz, Benim feryadımı duyamaz. Beni anlamak, beni duymak için, ayrılık acısı.çekmiş, gönlü yaralanmış, içli bir insan isterim ki, acılarımı, dertlerimi ona anlatayım. Aslından, vatanından ayrı düşmüş, oradan uzaklaşmış kişi, orada geçirmiş olduğu mutlu zamanı arar, o zamanı tekrar yaşamak ister, ayrıldığı sevgiliye tekrar kayuşmak arzu eder. Ben her mecliste, her toplulukta, inledim, ağladım, durdum. Ben, huysuz insanlarla da, iyi insanlarla da düşüp kalktım. Herkes, kendi anlayışına, zannına göre, benim dostum oldu. Ama, kimse benim gönlümdeki sırları araştırmadı, öğrenemedi…

Halbuki benim sırrım, feryadımdan uzak değildir. Fakat her gözde onu görecek nûr, her kulakta, onu işitecek, duyacak güç yoktur. Ten candan, can da tenden gizli değildir. Fakat kimseye canı görmek izni verilmemiştir. Ney’in şu sesi, gönlü yakan bir ayrılık, bir aşk ateşidir. Kimde bu ateş yoksa, o, maddî varlığından kurtulsun, yok olsun.

Ney’in sesindeki tesir, yakıcılık, onun içine düşen aşk ateşindendir. Hakîkat şarabında bulunan, insanı mest eden hal de, aşk coşkunluğundandır. Ney, sevgilisinden ayrılmış olanın arkadaşıdır, dostudur. Onun yakıcı sesi, bizim Hakk’a kavuşmamıza engel olan perdelerimizi yırtmıştır. Ney gibi bir zehri, ney gibi bir panzehiri, ney gibi bir dostu, ney gibi bir âşıkı kim görmüştür? Ney, kanlarla dolu bir yoldan, aşk yolundan bahsetmektedir. O, sevgi yüzünden çöllere düşen Mecnun’un aşk hikâyelerini anlatmaktadır. Bize, hak yolunu gösteren gerçek aşkın mahremi, dostu, aklını yitirmiş âşıklardan başkası değildir. Konuşan dile, kulaktan gayri müşteri, tâlib yoktur.

Gamlı geçen günlerimiz uzadı ve sona ermesi gecikti. O günler, mutsuzluk, acılar ve ayrılık ateşleri ile arkadaş oldu da, yandı, gitti. Günler geçip gitti ise varsın geçsin. Gam yeme, onlara de ki: “Geçin, gidin… sizin gidişlerinizden bizim korkumuz yoktur… Ey mübârek, ey temiz dost… Sen kal, sen var ol. Hakk âşıkları, muhabbet deryâsının balıklarıdır. Onlar vuslat suyuna kanmazlar, bu sebeple balıktan başka herkes suya kandı, nasibi olmayanın da günü, uzadıkça uzadı. Rûhen yükselmemiş, ham kalmış kişi, yetişkin, olgun kişinin halinden anlamaz. Öyle ise sözü kısa kesmek gerektir, vesselâm.

Sümer toplumunda M.Ö 5000 yıllarından itibaren kullanıldığı sanılan neyin elimizdeki en eski bulgusu, MÖ 2800-3000 yıllarından kalan bugün Amerika’da Phledelphia Üniversitesi Müzesi’ nde sergilenen neydir. Çalgının o dönemlerde de dinsel törenlerde kullanıldığı sanılmaktadır. Assomption rahiplerinden Thibaut’ un “esrârengiz, cezbedici, tatlı ve âhenkli bir ses” diye tanımladığı ve şu şekilde şiirleştirdiği ney sadâsı, her dönemde insanları derinden etkilemiş, özellikle dinsel duyguları çağrıştırmıştır.

Türklerin İslâmlaşma süreci X. yüzyılda başlamıştı. Türklerin İslâmiyetten önceki dinleri olan Şamanizm, Animizm ve Totemizmde de mûsikînin çok önemli rolü vardı. Bu dinlerin tümünde törenler müzik eşliğinde yapılırdı. Örneğin çoğunlukla hâkim olan Şamanizmde kam, baksı veya şaman denilen din adamları ellerinde kopuz ile dolaşır, dînî mesajlarını mûsikî yardımıyla iletirlerdi. İslâmiyette de mûsikîye karşı bir cephe mevcut değildir. İslâm Peygâmberi Hz.Muhammed, Kuran’ ın güzel sesle ve kâideye müstenîd âhenkle okunmasını öğütlemiştir. Tecvîd ve Kıraat işte bu rağbetin sonucunda doğmuştur ve mûsikî ile yakın ilişkileri vardır.

Zaten Türk yaşantısına yatkın olan ilahi musiki, ney ile can bulmuş, ünlü tasavvuf ehli Hz.Mevlana ile ney doruğa ulaşmıştır. Tasavvuf ile harmanlanan neyin ilahi sesi gönüllerimizi çoşturmaya devam ettirmektedir.
